Metal Active Gas Welding
MAG welding is a method of arc welding in a shielded environment, for which carbon dioxide (CO2) and an uncoated electrode are used. MAG welding is used for:
- low-alloyed construction steels;
- thin and medium-thick sheet metal.
The thickness of the material for MAG welding should not exceed one millimetre, therefore it is mostly used in car bodywork services and similar works, as well as for steel construction welding.
During MAG welding an electric arc between a welding wire and the workpiece metal is formed (direct current is used), which heats the workpiece metal(s), causing them to join. The carbon dioxide as a shielding gas is active, therefore it partially reacts with the molten steel, which means the shield is not perfect – due to the intense heat, MAG welding namely causes CO2 to split into carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen (O), which causes partial oxidation. For this reason, it is not suitable for welding light alloys or light steels.
Although MAG welding is not suitable for all materials and the welded seam is a bit wider, it is extremely useful for less demanding work and for ordinary steel, because this welding method is the most affordable. Our experts will best advise you if this procedure is more suitable for your products than welding in free atmosphere or welding in inert gases – all in all, to change from MAG welding to MIG welding all we have to do is change the gas bottle, so changing the welding method is fairly simple.
MIG/MAG Welding Procedure
MIG and MAG welding, which are among the most common welding processes, are mainly used in industrial production and in the manufacture of steel structures.
All welding processes according to EN ISO 3834-2
MAG welding is the most affordable and at the same time the most prevalent welding method. At Kovinc d.o.o. we ensure high quality services in accordance with approved welding procedures and EN ISO 3834-2 standards, and our welders are certified for MAG welding and other methods in accordance with EN 287. No matter the required method, or the type of materials and products, we can ensure quality.
