MIG welding is a method of arc welding in an inert noble gas (argon and also helium), which surrounds the welding wire and the weld. Chemically it does not interact with the workpiece material, therefore it is carried out in a shielded environment, in which the oxidation of the weld is prevented. MIG welding is performed with a help of bare electrode or cord wire — welding wire galvanized with copper and coiled on a disc. In this type of welding, where the arc between the inflammable metal electrode and the workpiece material is burning, a high temperature is created with a direct current, which enables us to also weld thick materials and ensure high quality angular welds. MIG welding is therefore used for welding non-ferrous metals and alloys, aluminium and its alloys, as well as for constructions from high-alloy steels.
MIG welding is fast and simple, the quality is better that that of MAG welding, and removing the slag is not necessary. It is used when we perform welding inside of the plant and not outdoors.
In comparison with MAG procedure, MIG welding enables clear and smooth welds, therefore the quality of the product is better. But its advantage is mostly in the fact that we can weld thicker materials (up to 6 millimetres), meaning also fences, stairs and bigger constructions. The same machine can be used for the both procedures, only the gas needs to be changed (CO2 for MAG welding, inert argon for MIG welding).

- better mechanical characteristics of the weld;
- nicer, narrower weld;
- the possibility of overlay welding with exhausted elements;
- simple automatization.
